The Signs of Bullying

Bullying creates certain signs that you should watch out for, and if you think someone is being bullied then you need to talk to them about it and let them know that they can tell you about anything.

Emotional Effects:

  • Crying
  • Mood swings
  • Aggression
  • Depression
  • Self-Harm
  • Reluctancy to talk
  • Reluctancy to go near computers/phones (in cyberbullying)
  • Low confidence or self esteeem

Physical Effects:

  • Bruises
  • Crying
  • Broken bones
  • Depression
  • Self-harm
  • Bleeding
  • Unexplained cuts

Watch out for these signs to find out if someone is being bullied. If you even have the slightest suspicion, you must act to help them.

Education

Whether you are a parent or a teacher, you should be educating children under your care about bullying. You could do that as a teacher through a school assembly or as a parent by just sitting down and talking to your kids. Below you will find out how to educate people and what sort of advice to give them.

Teachers:

As a teacher you are able to educate kids really well, and you should. You could try having an assembly about bullying (you could use the Bully Aware Presentation for this). You should talk about the effects and the types of bullying and how to stop it. You should also make sure that everyone knows that you are there for them when they need help and that you will sort out the bullying, as that will make it easier for people to come to you if they have a problem.

Parents:

As a parent, you should sit down with your kid(s) and talk to them about bullying. You should be telling them from a young age that you are there for them no matter what the problem. You should also tell them about what bullying is and tell them that if they get bullied it is never their fault and they can always come to you for help.

You should also tell them about Bully Aware, Childline and other sites / organisations.
