Bullying is a problem which affects millions of people, of all ages, across the world. Its hurts people and it destroys their self-esteem and confidence, and can scar people for life, both physically and emotionally. It must be stopped! Listed here are the main types of bullying:

  • Physical - Physcial bullying is bullying by hitting the victim, or damaging their property. It can include punching, kicking, ripping clothes, stealing items, or any other type of physical contact which makes you feel hurt or upset. Even just a single punch or kick is WRONG so you need to tell someone to get it sorted out.
  • Verbal or Emotional - Verbal or emotional bullying is when the bully calls the victim names or is nasty to them in a verbal or emotional way. Sometimes it includes name calling or saying bad things, or it could be leaving people out of games, spreading rumours about them or threatening them. Some people say its only playing and that it doesn't hurt, but if something somebody says or does upsets you then it IS bullying, and you need to tell someone.
  •       Exclusion - Sometimes, bullies make the victim feel upset by excluding them. This could be from a group, a game or a discussion and it often makes people feel upset and lonely. Often, this is done by a group and not only a single person, which can make it even more upsetting.
  •       Rumours - Sometimes, a bully will spread nasty rumours about the victim. This could be saying they have said or done something or it could just be a lie about them. Its important that if people are spreading rumours about someone, you DON'T spread them, because this just makes it worse.
  •      Threatening - Often, a bully will threaten the victim and say they will harm them if they try to do something about it. It is important to remember that most of the time they are just lying because they are scared of getting told off, and even if they do do it, that just means they will get in even more trouble. You MUST tell someone, because that is the best way to stop bullying.
  • Cyberbullying - Cyberbullying is bullying through some form of electronic communication - email, phone, instant messengers and anything else that involves communication through the internet or electronic devices. It often involves hate websites or groups againist a person or a group of people or nasty messenges or emails. The worst part about cyberbullying is that the bully can remain anonymous so you don't know who they are, But you should still tell someone and report it by clicking the Report Abuse button because there are people who can find out who it is and put a stop to it.

All forms of bullying hurt, so you should NEVER participate in bullying. If you get bullied then you need to tell an adult you trust, or the police, so they can help stop it. Even if it doesn't seem important, YOU are important, so it is very important that you tell someone so they can help you.

You need to report bullying to someone you trust - a parent, teacher or the police - so that you can get help. If you don't want to, or they can't help, you can use Got a Problem or Need Advice on BullyAware, or phone Childline on 0800 1111.
